Here is some some amazing work by a few very talented animatronics builders. You can learn an awful lot just by studying the mechanics and imagining how the mechanism movements translate to the motion of a character/creature. When designing animatronics you always want to work from the surface backwards. It doesn't matter how you get the desired effect- there are lots of different methods of making something move. What matters is that you get the finished effect right.
