. Now a days, there are many ways of adding sound to anything. Youtube shows several ways of doing this and eBay makes available the circuits of different styles to make it happen. There are simple circuits for "talking cards" to complex circuits that can be activated with a micro-controller such as Arduino. Price is also a deciding factor.
The sound quality of each is a concern, as well as the supply voltage and space available to add the effect. Size of the circuit is key in some installations. A few allow you to attach a small speaker directly or an amplifier to really make an impression.
Most of them need software to program in the sounds but some can be added with just a microphone. Having different sounds in one circuit and then have them addressable, is a huge bonus.
As a prop maker for the industry, including sound in a hero prop was never needed because it was always added to the film in post production, but sometimes if a replica prop was created, sound became an added benefit.
The video below shows one such circuit and programmer. The sound board shown is a 28 pin beauty but is also available in an 16P version (less functions).
